What is lithium ion battery?

Lithium ion battery (Li-ion battery)is a rechargeable lithium battery that uses the Lithium alloy oxide for anode, graphite for cathode. Lithium battery application originated from pace maker, because of low self discharge rate and smooth discharge, its very suitable to be embedded into human body without frequent changing. in 1992,Sony developed the first commercial lithium ion battery, this brought revolutionary changes to portable electronics, such as the mobile phones, laptops, became smaller and lighter with the new type battery.

How do they work?

The electrons get embedded into the cathode grooves when charging, when discharging, they gets out from cathode and go to anode grooves, a come and back, its a cycle.

Chemical reaction on anode when charging:
LiCoO2==Li(1-x)CoO2+XLi++Xe-(electron)
Reaction on cathode when charging
6C+XLi++Xe- = LixC6
Reaction on cathode when discharging：
LixC6 → xLi+ + xe- + 6C

Lithium ion battery advantages:

1-High energy density. it’s energy density reaches 600Wh/kg, almost 7 times of lead acid battery.

2-Long cycle life. For example, normal mobile phone battery is lithium ion battery, they can have 500 times cycle life, generally 3 years with 100%DOD.
3- High voltage. 3.7V is about 3 times higher than NiCd and NiMh battery voltage.
4-High Power. with special design, it can have high rate discharge rate as 50C.
5-Low self discharge rate. its one if the most obvious features of lithium ion battery, generally speaking it can be as low as 1% per month, less than 1/20 of NiMh battery.
6- Light weight. With the same size, its weight can be only 1/6 of lead acid battery.
